Welcome to No, Seriously...
Hi. I'm Jen Logan. I'm a punk rock mom and wife of a seriously skilled creative man, who we should probably call St. John. I am a mental health therapist and CPA and I used to own a record label. I have had a few careers, and worn a lot of hats in my life. I have been married for almost 21 years now, and my daughter is about to turn 14. She doesn't like me to talk about her much because she hates to be in the spotlight which is kind of weird for a kid who is on stage all the time between theater and her rock band. I am really close with my parents, probably to a point of co-dependency, but that's okay. I love them. They are the two people who told me I could be anything I wanted to be and encouraged me to take chances.
The one thing that has been a constant in my life is punk rock music. I can tell you what I was listening to at most points in my life. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain died and I remember when a girl was struck by lightening at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in DC. It isn't a wonder I married a musician and hear music in my house consistently.
I like to tell stories about my childhood, and my family, and the weird encounters I have in the world. These are mostly just my thoughts written down in a place my kid can one day discover and learn a little more about me. Did I mention I have a pretty high opinion of myself?
Going Postal
I spend a lot of time at the post office. Between my CPA practice and my Rodan + Fields business, I have a lot of packages going out. I normally go directly to the self-serve kiosk. The lines inside are usually rather long and the postal workers are usually rather...
Daredevil
We took a little trip with my parents this weekend. My mom decided it would be fun for Riley to have an adventure every month, so we started out the year with a quick trip to Splash Village. It's only about an hour away, so we can all pile into the car and get there...
Family
I love family parties. It gives me a chance to catch up with my cousins who I don't see nearly enough and the aunt and uncle on my dad'd side of the family who provide me with a lot of information about my dad and what he was like as a kid. I hear about how their dad...
Ground Control to Major Tom
I am a firm believer in the idea that you do good things and you are rewarded. Today I was running errands with my mom. We are both members of a women's organization that does volunteer work in our community. One of the projects we are working on requires us to set up...
The Gift That Keeps on Giving
I took my dad out shopping for my mom's Christmas gift the other day. A few strange things happened while we were shopping. First, my dad paid with a credit card which he never does. He pays for everything with cash. It doesn't matter what he is buying, it could be a...
Christmas Spirit
I was standing in a very long line yesterday while Christmas shopping in the middle of the day. The woman in front of me was still looking at the stands of last minute gifts as she was walking up, taking her time as we slowly inched along. She turned to me and said...
When Worlds Collide
As I was driving my daughter to a sleepover at her Grandparents’ house the other day she asked “Why are there so many songs about Santa at Christmas and not that many about Jesus? It’s His birthday and there aren’t even that many songs about him”. Part of me wanted to...
Holiday in the Sun
Since my daughter was thirteen months old we have vacationed in Atlantis. It's been a few years since we have been here because my husband has this crazy idea that there should be a direct correlation between my income and the number of vacations we take. He worries...
Gratitude (Again)
About a month ago my daughter and I were out driving, running errands and shopping. She saw a homeless man on the side of the road. As we drove by she said "I wish we could help that man" and I told her we could. I didn't have a single dollar in my purse at the time...
Punk Rock Girl
Free dress days are always either a total joy or a total headache depending on two things - the theme and the preparedness of the woman who can't dress herself in the morning. Luckily today's free dress had no theme. When there is a theme it is usually sports and in...
I Want Candy
My daughter busted us eating her candy at least three times in the past week. I would like to say that this only happens around Halloween, but it's not true. It's an ongoing battle in our house. Whenever our daughter brings home candy she puts it in a cup in the...
Loyalty
When I was in high school I got into a lot of trouble. I was young, immature, and doing stupid stuff all the time. I was in detention a lot, mostly for being out of uniform because I wore combat boots with my plaid uniform skirt and I always wore black socks instead...
