Welcome to No, Seriously...
Hi. I'm Jen Logan. I'm a punk rock mom and wife of a seriously skilled creative man, who we should probably call St. John. I am a mental health therapist and CPA and I used to own a record label. I have had a few careers, and worn a lot of hats in my life. I have been married for almost 21 years now, and my daughter is about to turn 14. She doesn't like me to talk about her much because she hates to be in the spotlight which is kind of weird for a kid who is on stage all the time between theater and her rock band. I am really close with my parents, probably to a point of co-dependency, but that's okay. I love them. They are the two people who told me I could be anything I wanted to be and encouraged me to take chances.
The one thing that has been a constant in my life is punk rock music. I can tell you what I was listening to at most points in my life. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain died and I remember when a girl was struck by lightening at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in DC. It isn't a wonder I married a musician and hear music in my house consistently.
I like to tell stories about my childhood, and my family, and the weird encounters I have in the world. These are mostly just my thoughts written down in a place my kid can one day discover and learn a little more about me. Did I mention I have a pretty high opinion of myself?
Don’t Poke the Bear!
My daughter has been asking for a juice box nightly for the last week. We don't let her drink juice boxes often and never in the evening so I'm not really sure where she got it in her head that she would be given juice at night, but she has been having nightly...
I Need a New Coat
My daughter is already embarrassed to be seen with me and she is only six. I can't blame her though. I ran out of the house wearing leggings and a tunic with a pair of ballet flats. I was very casual and when I got to the closet to grab a coat I realized that all of...
The Jerk Family
Social media is really making people crazy. My husband received this message yesterday from a guy who lives in our neighborhood. We had taken a walk up to the elementary school near our house since it was such a nice day. We played, slid, swung and ran for an hour and...
Pianist
Driving with my daughter in the backseat this morning, listening to The Little Mermaid soundtrack, she asked “Who is this?” I answered “Alan Menken”. After telling me how wonderful he is she asked about the instruments and if the band all played together or if they...
Betty Crocker
I love cake. I also love to bake, but my execution kind of sucks. I always have an idea in my head of how something is going to turn out and it rarely turns out that way. It's okay, I have fun baking and now my daughter and I bake together so it's twice as much fun. I...
Only Child Syndrome
I am an only child. It was great growing up and always being the best one at whatever I did because there was nobody there to measure up against. But then I got married and all of a sudden there was someone else in "my" family to compare myself to. It sucks to be...
“Not Really Gone” by Blaire Sharpe Book Review
"Not Really Gone" by Blaire Sharpe is about a woman growing up in a family with a lot of dysfunction and how the matriarch (Grandma) held her family together the best she could. It is the story of a girl growing up with absent and neglectful parents, but also a...
She’s Crafty
When I was pregnant with my daughter I remember talking with my husband about what she would look like. It was almost like setting our pictures side by side and picking who had the better physical feature. I won nose, eyebrows and bottom lip. He won the rest. My...
What’s My Age Again?
I was the guest reader for my daughter's class yesterday. I love going to read to the kids, and the little bodies seem to like me. I think it's because I am like a very large child in high heels. I say what is on my mind and I am awkward when in close proximity to...
They Call it Medicine for a Reason
Save I attempted to make homemade chicken noodle soup the other night. It's been quite some time since I have actually cooked anything. I am not a great cook. I am a master of salads but heated food it a challenge for me. I have set two stoves on fire in my life. Yes,...
Composing a Ransom Note to the Tooth Fairy
My daughter was home from school with an ear infection on friday. After a trip to the doctor we were sent to the pharmacy to pick up an antibiotic. I was trying to insert my credit card into the chip reader while contemplating how she had made it through close to six...
Cutting the Cord
My daughter has been very clingy lately. I don't know if it's the age, or the time of year, but she has been like a fabric softener sheet stuck to my leg. Most of the other Kindergarten parents have started to drop their kids off and let them walk into school by...
