Welcome to No, Seriously...
Hi. I'm Jen Logan. I'm a punk rock mom and wife of a seriously skilled creative man, who we should probably call St. John. I am a mental health therapist and CPA and I used to own a record label. I have had a few careers, and worn a lot of hats in my life. I have been married for almost 21 years now, and my daughter is about to turn 14. She doesn't like me to talk about her much because she hates to be in the spotlight which is kind of weird for a kid who is on stage all the time between theater and her rock band. I am really close with my parents, probably to a point of co-dependency, but that's okay. I love them. They are the two people who told me I could be anything I wanted to be and encouraged me to take chances.
The one thing that has been a constant in my life is punk rock music. I can tell you what I was listening to at most points in my life. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain died and I remember when a girl was struck by lightening at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in DC. It isn't a wonder I married a musician and hear music in my house consistently.
I like to tell stories about my childhood, and my family, and the weird encounters I have in the world. These are mostly just my thoughts written down in a place my kid can one day discover and learn a little more about me. Did I mention I have a pretty high opinion of myself?
Like a Fox
I am beginning to think someone is messing with me. We sold our rental property to an elderly couple a few months ago. During the closing process they changed the type of loan they would use to finance the house which delayed the closing. This wouldn't have been a...
Love & Marriage
My friend and her husband just celebrated their eighteenth wedding anniversary. I would say they are lucky, but anyone who has been married for a significant amount of time knows this isn't true. They worked hard, they compromised, they sacrificed and they drove each...
Someone has to be in charge…
Coloring with my daughter is a little like coloring in a North Korean prison. She doles out the markers you are to use and marks your pages indicating where each color belongs. She hands me one marker at a time, only after she has tested the color to see if she likes...
Ask and You Shall Receive
An interesting thing happens when you put your thoughts into the Universe - it responds. If you want something, you need to ask for it. It seems simple, but I think a lot of us have a hard time doing this. I spent a large portion of my childhood learning to be...
Gratitude
Sometimes I am so full of gratitude that it leaks out of my eyes. And what better day to be grateful than on Thanksgiving. I was standing in my kitchen washing green beans thinking about the people I have met in my life and how grateful I am for all of them, good and...
Down with the Sickness
My five year old has roid rage. She was prescribed Prednisolone for a cough last week. The cough is still around but now it's a little deeper and comes with a punch. Within a few minutes of taking her medicine she is ready to swing at anyone who walks by. It would be...
Unlikely Heroes
I picked up Travis Barker's book Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Death, and Drums, Drums, Drums in hopes that I might become a good drummer through osmosis. I am sick of being the dead weight in our family band. I should have known better. Travis says that to become...
Men Really Are From Mars
I was standing in the lobby of Aria the other night with a few of my coworkers watching as a line formed for the nightclub and one of the men in our group pointed out that the line consisted of about two hundred young women. He was fascinated by this. What was more...
Doppelganger
The last time I was away from my family for a few days was five years ago on a company trip to Las Vegas. I am back again in Las Vegas on another company trip for the weekend. This time my daughter is old enough to know that I will be gone for a few days and she...
It’s Vegas Baby!
Now I know why people say "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." It's because they can't wash their eyeballs. As I was strolling down the hall this morning to get my cold brew iced coffee I ran into what appeared to be two large pimps pulling a hooker out of a hotel...
Morning Rituals
I love sleep. It's one of the things in life I really excel at too. I know you are thinking that this is not really a big accomplishment, but this is an important life skill. We need sleep for our brains to function properly and it is not always an easy thing to do. I...
Karma
A few weeks ago we were at the child care center in our gym. My daughter heard a baby crying and like a parrot started mimicking the cry. I told her that it was not very nice to make fun of someone for crying. I don't think she even realized it was being mean. I asked...
