Betty Crocker

I love cake. I also love to bake, but my execution kind of sucks. I always have an idea in my head of how something is going to turn out and it rarely turns out that way. It’s okay, I have fun baking and now my daughter and I bake together so it’s twice as much fun. I normally buy a cake for our big events. I am blessed to know an amazing baker. She was a neighbor for a short period of time and she has a daughter who is a month older than my daughter so we got them together for a play date when they lived in the neighborhood. We have been friends since then. Life happened which took my baking angel away for a time period, but now she is back in the area. We have remained connected through social media and when I am in need of a beautiful cake for a big event, I know who to call. I will bake a cake for a small family party but not for larger gatherings. We alternate the size of my daughter’s birthday parties from year to year. For the years she has big parties I don’t bake, but for the small family birthday celebrations I will attempt to bake a cake. (more…)

They Call it Medicine for a Reason

No seriously, it’s chicken noodle soup.

Save

I attempted to make homemade chicken noodle soup the other night. It’s been quite some time since I have actually cooked anything. I am not a great cook. I am a master of salads but heated food it a challenge for me. I have set two stoves on fire in my life. Yes, two stoves. My husband and I used to cook together a lot and when I got pregnant he took over the cooking duties, banishing me from the kitchen. I have not made a meal that requires any form of heat since then. Our daughter will be six in a few weeks, so that is almost seven years I have avoided a stove!  (more…)

I’m a Square Peg

I’m still a petulant teenager.

My boss thinks I am an idiot. He doesn’t say it in as many words, but it shows more often than not in his actions. He asked me to do some research on a project for a foreign client. I did the research and gave him and the client the information two weeks ago. He then discussed the project with another individual in the office who is a little like the wizard of Oz, running everything from behind the curtain. She is never wrong about anything and is very happy to tell you how right she is in the form of red corrections on any of your work she sees needs fixing. I call her the red pen lady. She reviews the work of idiots like me who can’t spell their own name without help. We often get this work returned to us with red marks all over it where we missed crossing a “t” or dotting an “i”. Nothing leaves the office before she has approved it. So of course my boss had to get her involved in this project. (more…)

I Can Take You Where You Need To Go

Let’s go!

I accidentally signed up to be an Uber driver. I know this seems like something that should not be allowed to happen and I agree. But somehow, I did, in fact sign up. It happened when I was getting ready to go on a company trip. I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone by asking for a ride to the airport and I thought using Uber would be fun, so I added the app to my phone a few days before leaving. My husband and father thought me using Uber did not sound fun at all. In fact, they agreed that I would definitely end up in the trunk of a car bound and gagged. The feminist in me screamed “how dare you! I can do this myself!” and the realist in me agreed that it was probably not a good idea for a woman traveling alone to hop in the backseat of a stranger’s car. It was probably for the best considering when I tried to use the app I realized that I had not done what I had intended to do. Somehow I managed to sign myself up as a driver instead of a passenger.
